Orthopedics

Orthopedics (pronounced: or-tho-pee-diks), also spelled Orthopaedics, is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments. The term originates from the Greek words "orthos", meaning straight, and "paideia", meaning rearing of children.

Etymology

The term "Orthopedics" was coined by French physician Nicholas Andry in 1741, from the Greek words "orthos" (meaning straight) and "paideia" (meaning rearing of children). The term was originally used to describe the practice of straightening and correcting body deformities in children.
