Arthrodesis

Arthrodesis (pronounced: ar-thro-dee-sis) is a surgical procedure that involves the fusion of two or more bones in a joint. This procedure is typically performed to alleviate pain and improve stability in a joint that has been damaged by arthritis, injury, or disease.

Etymology

The term "arthrodesis" is derived from the Greek words "arthro", meaning joint, and "desis", meaning binding together.

Procedure

During an arthrodesis procedure, the surgeon removes the articular cartilage from the joint surfaces and then uses various techniques to encourage the bones to grow together, or fuse. This can include the use of bone grafts, metal plates, screws, or rods to stabilize the joint while it heals.

Indications

Arthrodesis is typically indicated for patients with severe joint pain and instability that has not responded to conservative treatment methods. This can include conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, and certain types of joint instability.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, arthrodesis carries certain risks and potential complications. These can include infection, nerve damage, nonunion (failure of the bones to fuse), and decreased mobility in the joint.

Related Terms

  • Arthroplasty: A surgical procedure to restore the function of a joint by replacing it with an artificial joint.
