External fixation
External Fixation
External fixation (/ɪkˈstɜːrnəl fɪkˈseɪʃən/) is a surgical treatment used to stabilize bone and soft tissues at a distance from the operative or injury focus. They provide unobstructed access to the relevant skeletal and soft tissue structures for their initial assessment and also for secondary interventions needed to restore bony continuity and a functional soft tissue cover.
Etymology
The term "external fixation" is derived from the Latin words "externus" meaning "outside" and "fixus" meaning "to fix or fasten".
Procedure
The procedure involves the use of pins or screws that are inserted into the bone on either side of the fracture. These are then connected to a metal bar or frame outside the skin. The bar or frame is adjusted over time to ensure the bone heals in the correct position.
Related Terms
- Orthopedic surgery: The branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system.
- Fracture: A break in the continuity of the bone.
- Bone healing: The physiological process in which the body facilitates the repair of a bone fracture.
- Pins and screws: Medical devices used to hold the bone fragments in place.
- Metal bar or frame: External device connected to the pins or screws to stabilize the fracture.
Advantages
External fixation has several advantages, including minimal disruption of the blood supply to the bone, the ability to adjust the device postoperatively, and the ability to stabilize open fractures with significant soft tissue injury.
Disadvantages
Potential disadvantages include pin tract infection, neurovascular injury, and patient discomfort due to the bulky frame.
