Lake County is a county located in the state of South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,797. The county seat is Madison, which is also the largest city in the county.
History
Lake County was established in 1873. The county was named for the numerous lakes in the area, which are a significant feature of the local geography. The development of the county was closely tied to the expansion of the railroad and agriculture, which remain important to the local economy.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 575 square miles (1,490 km²), of which 563 square miles (1,460 km²) is land and 12 square miles (31 km²) (2.1%) is water. The county is characterized by its rolling plains and numerous lakes, which provide opportunities for recreation and wildlife habitat.
