Britton, South Dakota
Britton, South Dakota is a city in Marshall County, in the state of South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of Britton was 1,241.
History[edit]
Britton was founded in 1884 and named after Isaac Britton, a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1885. The arrival of the railroad was a significant factor in the city's early growth and development.
Geography[edit]
Britton is located at coordinates 45°47′N 97°45′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.99 square miles (2.56 km²), all of it land. The city is situated in the northeastern part of South Dakota, near the border with North Dakota.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 1,241 people, 563 households, and 331 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,253.5 inhabitants per square mile (484.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Britton is primarily based on agriculture, with many residents engaged in farming and related activities. The city also has a number of small businesses and services that cater to the local community.
Education[edit]
Britton is served by the Britton-Hecla School District, which provides education from kindergarten through 12th grade. The district includes Britton-Hecla Elementary School and Britton-Hecla High School.
Transportation[edit]
Britton is accessible via U.S. Route 12, which runs east-west through the city. The city is also served by the Britton Municipal Airport, which provides general aviation services.
Notable People[edit]
- Frank Farrar, the 24th Governor of South Dakota, was born in Britton.
- John Hamre, a former Deputy Secretary of Defense and President of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, is also from Britton.
