Marshall County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of South Dakota. Established in 1885, the county was named after Marshall Vincent, a prominent local figure of the time. The county seat and largest city is Britton.
Geography
Marshall County encompasses an area of 886 square miles, of which 834 square miles is land and 52 square miles is water. The landscape is characterized by rolling plains and numerous lakes, making it part of the Prairie Pothole Region, which is known for its high density of small wetlands.
Demographics
As of the 2020 United States Census, the population of Marshall County was 4,656. The demographic composition has historically been predominantly rural, with agriculture being a significant part of the local economy.
Economy
The economy of Marshall County is largely based on agriculture, including the cultivation of crops and livestock farming. The presence of numerous lakes also makes tourism and recreational fishing significant contributors to the local economy.
