Hutchinson County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,426. The county seat is Olivet. The county was created in 1862 and organized in 1871. It is named for John Hutchinson, a territorial legislator.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 814 square miles (2,110 km²), of which 813 square miles (2,110 km²) is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²) (0.1%) is water.

As of the census of 2020, there were 7,426 people, 3,200 households, and 2,100 families residing in the county. The population density was 9.1 people per square mile (3.5/km²). There were 3,600 housing units at an average density of 4.4 per square mile (1.7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.2% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% African American, and 1.2% from two or more races. 0.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Hutchinson County is governed by a board of commissioners. The county is part of South Dakota's at-large congressional district.
