Milbank is a city in Grant County, South Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Grant County. The population was 3,353 at the 2020 census.
History
Milbank was founded in 1880 when the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad was extended to that point. The city was named for Jeremiah Milbank, a director of the railroad. Milbank is known as the birthplace of American Legion Baseball.
Geography
Milbank is located at 45°13′7″N 96°38′1″W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.41 square miles (8.83 km²), of which 3.39 square miles (8.78 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km²) is water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2020, there were 3,353 people, 1,482 households, and 872 families residing in the city. The population density was 988.5 inhabitants per square mile (381.7/km²). There were 1,620 housing units at an average density of 477.5 per square mile (184.4/km²).
Economy
Milbank's economy is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and retail trade. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Valley Queen Cheese Factory, which is one of the largest employers in the area.
Education
Milbank is served by the Milbank School District, which includes Milbank High School, Milbank Middle School, and Koch Elementary School. The city also has a public library, the Grant County Public Library.

- Tom Brokaw, television journalist and author, was born in Webster, South Dakota, but grew up in Yankton and attended the University of South Dakota.
