Blackhawk is a census-designated place (CDP) in Meade County, South Dakota, United States. It is part of the Rapid City Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2020 census, the population of Blackhawk was 3,085.
Geography[edit]
Blackhawk is located at coordinates 44°8′N 103°21′W. The total area of the CDP is approximately 4.3 square miles (11.1 km²), all of it land. The community is situated in the western part of South Dakota, near the Black Hills region.
History[edit]
The area now known as Blackhawk was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Lakota Sioux. The community was named after the famous Sauk leader Black Hawk.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 3,085 people, 1,200 households, and 900 families residing in the CDP. The population density was approximately 717.4 people per square mile (277.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American, African American, Asian, and other races.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Blackhawk is primarily based on local businesses, services, and some light manufacturing. Many residents commute to nearby Rapid City for employment.
Education[edit]
Blackhawk is served by the Meade School District, which provides educational services to the community. The nearest high school is located in Sturgis.
Transportation[edit]
Blackhawk is accessible via Interstate 90, which runs east-west through the northern part of the community. The nearest major airport is Rapid City Regional Airport, located approximately 20 miles southeast of Blackhawk.
Recreation and Attractions[edit]
The proximity to the Black Hills offers residents and visitors a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, biking, and sightseeing. The community is also close to several notable attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Custer State Park.
