Deadwood, South Dakota
Deadwood, South Dakota is a city in Lawrence County, South Dakota, United States. It is named after the dead trees found in its gulch. The city had a population of 1,270 according to the 2020 census. Deadwood is known for its rich history, particularly during the Black Hills Gold Rush.
History
Deadwood was established in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills led to an influx of settlers and miners, despite the land being granted to the Lakota people by the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868. The town quickly grew and became famous for its lawlessness and the presence of notable figures such as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wild Bill Hickok was a legendary figure in the American Old West. He was shot and killed while playing poker at Nuttal & Mann's Saloon in Deadwood on August 2, 1876. Hickok's death is one of the most famous events in the town's history.
Calamity Jane
Calamity Jane, another well-known figure of the Old West, was also associated with Deadwood. She was known for her sharpshooting skills and her compassionate nature, often caring for the sick and needy.
Geography
Deadwood is located in the northern Black Hills, a region known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty. The city is situated in a narrow gulch surrounded by steep hills and dense forests.
