Sturgis is a city in Meade County, South Dakota, United States. It is known for being the location of one of the largest annual motorcycle rallies in the world, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The city was founded in 1878 and incorporated in 1888. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,020.

History[edit]

Sturgis was founded in 1878 during the Black Hills Gold Rush. It was named after Samuel D. Sturgis, a commander at nearby Fort Meade. The city quickly grew as a supply center for the surrounding area.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.03 square miles (10.44 km²), all land. The city is situated in the northern part of the Black Hills.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 7,020 people, 3,000 households, and 1,800 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,742.4 people per square mile (672.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American, African American, and other races.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Sturgis is heavily influenced by the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The event significantly boosts the local economy through tourism, hospitality, and retail.
