Badlands National Park is a national park located in southwestern South Dakota, United States. The park protects 242,756 acres (98,240 ha) of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires blended with the largest undisturbed mixed grass prairie in the United States. The park is managed by the National Park Service.
History
The area that is now Badlands National Park has a rich history. The Lakota people have inhabited the region for thousands of years. The park was originally designated as a national monument on January 29, 1939, and was later redesignated as a national park on November 10, 1978.
Geology
The park is known for its unique geological formations, which include sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires. These formations were created over millions of years through the deposition and subsequent erosion of sedimentary rock layers. The park's geologic formations contain one of the world's richest fossil beds, where the remains of ancient mammals such as the saber-toothed cat and three-toed horse have been found.
Flora and Fauna
Badlands National Park is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species. The park's mixed grass prairie supports species such as the American bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dog, and black-footed ferret.
