Box Elder County is a county located in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 57,664. The county seat and largest city is Brigham City. The county was named for the box elder trees that abound in the area.
History
Box Elder County was created in 1856. The area was originally inhabited by the Shoshone people. The first European settlers were Mormon pioneers who arrived in the mid-19th century. The county has a rich history of agriculture, particularly in the production of fruit and livestock.
Geography
Box Elder County covers an area of 6,749 square miles, of which 5,734 square miles is land and 1,015 square miles is water. The county is characterized by its diverse geography, which includes parts of the Great Salt Lake, the Wasatch Range, and the Great Basin Desert.

As of the 2020 census, there were 57,664 people, 19,000 households, and 14,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 10 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American, Asian, and other racial groups.
Economy
The economy of Box Elder County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county is known for its fruit production, particularly peaches and apples. Thiokol, a major manufacturer of rocket motors, is one of the largest employers in the county.
Education
Box Elder County is served by the Box Elder School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to a campus of Utah State University.
