Sevier County is a county located in the central part of the state of Utah, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,522. The county seat is Richfield. The county was created in 1865 and named for the Sevier River, which runs through the county.

History

Sevier County was established in 1865 by the Utah Territory legislature. The area was originally inhabited by the Ute and Paiute tribes. The first European settlers were Mormon pioneers who arrived in the mid-19th century. The county has a rich history of agriculture, mining, and transportation.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,918 square miles (4,970 km²), of which 1,911 square miles (4,950 km²) is land and 7.3 square miles (19 km²) (0.4%) is water. The Sevier River is a significant geographical feature, providing water for irrigation and recreation.

As of the 2020 census, there were 21,522 people, 7,000 households, and 5,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 11 people per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American, Asian, and other races.

The economy of Sevier County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, mining, and tourism. The county is known for its production of alfalfa, livestock, and other agricultural products. Mining activities include coal and other minerals. Tourism is also a growing sector, with attractions such as Fishlake National Forest and various outdoor recreational opportunities.
