Millard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,975. The county seat is Fillmore, and the largest city is Delta. The county was created in 1851 and named after Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States.

History

Millard County was established in 1851 by the Utah Territory legislature. The county was named in honor of President Millard Fillmore, who was in office at the time. Fillmore was designated as the territorial capital of Utah, and the Utah Territorial Statehouse was constructed there. However, the capital was later moved to Salt Lake City.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,828 square miles (17,680 km²), of which 6,572 square miles (17,020 km²) is land and 256 square miles (660 km²) (3.8%) is water. The county is characterized by a diverse landscape that includes parts of the Great Basin and the Sevier Desert.

As of the 2020 census, there were 12,975 people, 4,299 households, and 3,200 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.0 people per square mile (0.77/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

Economy

The economy of Millard County is diverse, with significant contributions from agriculture, manufacturing, and energy production. The county is home to the Intermountain Power Plant, one of the largest coal-fired power plants in the western United States.
