Uintah County, Utah is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,620. The county seat and largest city is Vernal. Uintah County was established in 1880 and named after the Ute Tribe.
Geography
Uintah County covers an area of approximately 4,501 square miles (11,660 km²), of which 4,480 square miles (11,600 km²) is land and 21 square miles (54 km²) is water. The county is part of the Uintah Basin, a geologic structural basin in eastern Utah. The Green River flows through the county, providing vital water resources for agriculture and recreation.
History
The area now known as Uintah County has been inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous peoples, including the Fremont culture and the Ute people. European-American settlers began arriving in the mid-19th century, and the county was officially established in 1880. The discovery of oil and natural gas in the early 20th century significantly boosted the local economy.
Economy
The economy of Uintah County is largely based on natural resources, including oil, natural gas, and mining. Agriculture, particularly cattle ranching and farming, also plays a significant role.
