Summit County is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 42,145. Its county seat is Coalville, and the largest city is Park City. Summit County is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.

History

Summit County was created in 1854. The county was named for the many mountain summits within its borders, including the Uinta Mountains and the Wasatch Range. The area was originally inhabited by the Ute and Shoshone tribes before European settlers arrived.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,882 square miles (4,875 km²), of which 1,872 square miles (4,848 km²) is land and 10 square miles (26 km²) (0.5%) is water. The county is known for its mountainous terrain, which includes the highest point in Utah, Kings Peak, at 13,528 feet (4,123 meters).

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were 42,145 people, 14,000 households, and 10,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 22 people per square mile (8/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.

Economy

The economy of Summit County is diverse, with significant contributions from tourism, agriculture, and mining. Park City is a major tourist destination, known for its ski resorts, including Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort. The Sundance Film Festival also takes place in Park City, attracting visitors from around the world.

Education

Summit County is served by the Park City School District and the North Summit School District. The county also has several private schools and is in proximity to higher education institutions in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.
