Alta Ski Area is a ski resort located in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, within the Little Cottonwood Canyon. It is one of the oldest ski resorts in the United States, having been established in 1938. Alta is renowned for its high annual snowfall, averaging 545 inches, and its policy of prohibiting snowboarding, making it one of the few remaining ski-only resorts in North America.

History[edit]

Alta Ski Area was founded in 1938, making it one of the oldest ski resorts in the country. The resort was developed with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which constructed the first chairlift using salvaged mining equipment. Alta has maintained a traditional skiing experience, focusing on natural terrain and minimal commercial development.

Geography[edit]

Alta is situated in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, part of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The resort's base elevation is 8,530 feet, and its summit reaches 10,550 feet. The area is known for its steep terrain and deep powder, attracting advanced and expert skiers.

Skiing and Snowboarding[edit]

Alta Ski Area offers 116 trails spread over 2,614 acres. The terrain is varied, with options for beginners, intermediates, and experts. However, snowboarding is not permitted at Alta, a policy that has been in place since the resort's inception.

Lifts[edit]

The resort operates 7 chairlifts and 3 surface lifts. The lift system is designed to provide access to a wide range of terrain, from groomed runs to off-piste areas.

Snowfall[edit]

Alta is famous for its abundant snowfall, receiving an average of 545 inches annually. The resort's location in the Wasatch Mountains contributes to its heavy snowfall, making it a popular destination for powder skiing.

Facilities[edit]

Alta offers a range of facilities, including ski rentals, dining options, and lodging. The resort has a ski school that provides lessons for all skill levels. Despite its traditional approach, Alta has modern amenities to ensure a comfortable experience for visitors.

Environmental Initiatives[edit]

Alta Ski Area is committed to environmental sustainability. The resort participates in various conservation programs and initiatives to protect the natural environment of the Little Cottonwood Canyon.
