Tooele County is a county located in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 72,698. The county seat and largest city is Tooele. The county was created in 1850 and organized in 1852.
History
Tooele County was originally settled by Mormon pioneers in the mid-19th century. The county was named after the Goshute word for the area, which was later anglicized to "Tooele." The region has a rich history of mining and military activities, particularly during the World War II era.
Geography
Tooele County is located in the western part of Utah and is bordered by Box Elder County to the north, Salt Lake County to the east, Utah County to the southeast, Juab County to the south, and the state of Nevada to the west. The county covers a total area of 7,287 square miles, of which 6,930 square miles is land and 357 square miles is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 72,698 people, 22,997 households, and 18,123 families residing in the county. The population density was 10.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Native American, Asian, and other races.
Economy
The economy of Tooele County has historically been based on mining, military, and agriculture. The Tooele Army Depot and the Dugway Proving Ground are significant military installations in the county. In recent years, the county has seen growth in residential development and retail sectors.
Education
Tooele County is served by the Tooele County School District, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools in the area. Higher education opportunities are available through Utah State University Tooele Regional Campus.
