Kane County, Utah is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,667. The county seat and largest city is Kanab.

History[edit]

Kane County was created on January 16, 1864, and was named for Thomas L. Kane, a friend of the Mormon pioneers. The county has a rich history tied to the early settlement of Utah and the westward expansion of the United States.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,109 square miles (10,640 km²), of which 3,990 square miles (10,340 km²) is land and 119 square miles (310 km²) (2.9%) is water. The county is characterized by its diverse landscapes, including parts of the Colorado Plateau, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

As of the 2020 census, there were 7,667 people, 3,000 households, and 2,100 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.9 people per square mile (0.73/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of Native American, Asian, and other races.
