Anderson County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 203,718. Its county seat is Anderson. The county was created in 1826 and named after Robert Anderson, a Revolutionary War hero.

History

Anderson County was formed in 1826 from land that was once part of the Cherokee territory. The county was named after Robert Anderson, a general in the American Revolutionary War. The city of Anderson, also known as "The Electric City," was the first city in the Southeast to have a continuous supply of electric power, earning it the nickname.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 757 square miles (1,960 km²), of which 715 square miles (1,850 km²) is land and 42 square miles (110 km²) (5.5%) is water. The county is part of the Piedmont region of the state.

The racial makeup of the county was 77.2% White, 18.2% Black or African American, 1.1% Asian, and 2.5% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5% of the population.
