Walterboro is a city in Colleton County, South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Colleton County. The city is located in the southern part of the state and is part of the Lowcountry region. As of the 2020 census, the population of Walterboro was approximately 5,429.
History[edit]
Walterboro was founded in 1783 as a summer retreat for plantation owners seeking to escape the heat and mosquitoes of the Lowcountry. The city was named after two of the original settlers, Paul and Jacob Walter. Over time, Walterboro grew into a hub for agriculture and commerce.
During the American Civil War, Walterboro served as a refuge for people fleeing the coastal areas. The city has several historic buildings and sites, including the Colleton County Courthouse and the Walterboro Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
