Newberry County is a county located in the state of South Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 37,919. The county seat is Newberry. The county was formed in 1785 and is part of the Columbia, South Carolina metropolitan area.
History
Newberry County was formed in 1785 as part of the Ninety-Six District. The county was named after the town of Newberry, which was established in the mid-18th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee and other Native American tribes before European settlers arrived.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 647 square miles (1,676 km²), of which 630 square miles (1,631 km²) is land and 17 square miles (44 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is characterized by its rolling hills and numerous lakes and rivers, including Lake Murray and the Saluda River.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, there were 37,919 people, 14,709 households, and 9,876 families residing in the county. The population density was 60 people per square mile (23/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 64.5% White, 30.1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5% of the population.
Economy
The economy of Newberry County is diverse, with key industries including manufacturing, agriculture, and education. The county is home to several large employers, including Newberry College and Samsung Electronics's home appliance manufacturing plant.
Education
Newberry County is served by the School District of Newberry County, which operates several elementary, middle, and high schools. Higher education is provided by Newberry College, a private liberal arts college located in the city of Newberry.
Transportation
Major highways in Newberry County include Interstate 26, U.S. Route 76, and South Carolina Highway 34. The county is also served by the Newberry County Airport, which provides general aviation services.
