Marlboro County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,118. The county seat is Bennettsville. The county was created in 1785 and named for John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.
History[edit]
Marlboro County was established in 1785 as part of the reorganization of the state of South Carolina. It was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, an English military leader. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Civil War and its agricultural heritage.
Geography[edit]
Marlboro County is located in the northeastern part of South Carolina. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 485 square miles (1,260 km²), of which 480 square miles (1,200 km²) is land and 5.1 square miles (13 km²) (1.1%) is water.

Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 26,118 people, 10,383 households, and 6,872 families residing in the county. The population density was 54 people per square mile (21/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 50.4% White, 46.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Marlboro County has traditionally been based on agriculture, particularly tobacco farming. In recent years, the county has diversified its economy to include manufacturing and services.
Education[edit]
Marlboro County is served by the Marlboro County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to the Northeastern Technical College.
