Spartanburg County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 327,997, making it the fifth-most populous county in South Carolina. The county seat is Spartanburg. The county was formed in 1785 and is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC Combined Statistical Area.

History[edit]

Spartanburg County was established in 1785, following the American Revolutionary War. It was named after the Spartan Regiment, a local militia unit that fought in the war. The county has a rich history, including significant involvement in the American Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.

Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 819 square miles (2,120 km²), of which 808 square miles (2,090 km²) is land and 11 square miles (28 km²) (1.3%) is water. The county is part of the Piedmont region of the state.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 327,997 people, 123,447 households, and 85,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 406 people per square mile (157/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 68.5% White, 20.8% Black or African American, 1.9% Asian, and 8.8% from other races.

Spartanburg County has a diverse economy with major industries including manufacturing, healthcare, and education. The county is home to several large employers, including BMW Manufacturing Co., Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, and Milliken & Company.

The county is served by several public school districts, including Spartanburg County School District 1, Spartanburg County School District 2, and Spartanburg County School District 7. Higher education institutions in the county include Wofford College, Converse University, and Spartanburg Community College.
