Allendale County is a county located in the southern part of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,039. The county seat is Allendale. The county was created in 1919 from parts of Hampton, Barnwell, and Bamberg counties.
History[edit]
Allendale County was established in 1919, making it one of the newer counties in South Carolina. The county was named after the town of Allendale, which in turn was named for its founder, Paul H. Allen. The area has a rich history, with several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography[edit]
Allendale County is located in the southern part of South Carolina. According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 412 square miles (1,070 km²), of which 408 square miles (1,060 km²) is land and 4.1 square miles (11 km²) (1.0%) is water.

Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 8,039 people, 3,200 households, and 2,100 families residing in the county. The population density was 20 people per square mile (7.7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 71.2% African American, 26.1% White, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Allendale County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The county has several farms that produce crops such as cotton, peanuts, and soybeans. There are also a number of manufacturing facilities that provide employment to the local population.
Education[edit]
Allendale County is served by the Allendale County School District, which includes several elementary, middle, and high schools. The county is also home to the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie, which offers higher education opportunities to residents.
Transportation[edit]
Major highways that run through Allendale County include U.S. Route 301, U.S. Route 278, and South Carolina Highway 125. The county is also served by the Allendale County Airport.
