Travelers Rest is a city in Greenville County, South Carolina, United States. It is part of the Greenville-Mauldin-Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,788 at the 2020 census.

History[edit]

Travelers Rest, often referred to as "TR" by locals, has a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The city got its name because it was a place where travelers would rest before continuing their journey into the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area was officially incorporated as a city in 1891.

. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.6 square kilometers, all of it land. The city is situated near the Blue Ridge Mountains, providing scenic views and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Demographics[edit]

As of the 2020 census, there were 7,788 people, 2,987 households, and 1,987 families residing in the city. The population density was 671.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was predominantly White, with smaller percentages of African American, Asian, and other races.

Economy[edit]

The economy of Travelers Rest has traditionally been based on agriculture and small businesses. In recent years, the city has seen growth in tourism, partly due to its proximity to the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a popular multi-use greenway system.

Travelers Rest is served by the Greenville County School District. The city is home to several public schools, including Travelers Rest High School. Higher education institutions nearby include Furman University and North Greenville University.
