Union is a city in Union County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,174 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Union County.
History
Union was settled in the 18th century and was originally known as Unionville. The city and county were named for the old Union Church that stood nearby. The church was used by both the Presbyterians and the Episcopalians.
During the American Civil War, Union was one of the few towns in the state that was not burned by Union troops. The city has several historic buildings, including the Union County Courthouse and the Union Community Hospital.

Demographics
As of the census of 2020, there were 8,174 people, 3,567 households, and 2,234 families residing in the city. The population density was . The racial makeup of the city was 50.1% White, 47.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
Economy
Union's economy has historically been based on textile manufacturing, but in recent years it has diversified to include other industries such as automotive parts manufacturing and logistics. The city is also home to several small businesses and retail establishments.
Education
Union is served by the Union County School District. The district operates several elementary schools, a middle school, and Union County High School. Higher education is provided by the University of South Carolina Union, a regional campus of the University of South Carolina.
