York County is a county located in the north-central section of the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 282,090. Its county seat is York, and its largest city is Rock Hill. The county is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area.
History[edit]
York County was formed in 1785 as part of the Camden District. It was named after York, Pennsylvania, which in turn was named after the city of York in England. The area was originally inhabited by the Catawba and other indigenous peoples.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 696 square miles (1,800 km²), of which 681 square miles (1,760 km²) is land and 15 square miles (39 km²) (2.1%) is water. The county is drained by the Catawba River and its tributaries.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 282,090 people, 101,350 households, and 72,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 414 people per square mile (160/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 72.5% White, 19.2% Black or African American, 1.8% Asian, and 6.5% from other races.
Economy[edit]
York County has a diverse economy with sectors including manufacturing, retail, and healthcare. The county is home to several large employers, including 3D Systems, Duke Energy, and Wells Fargo.
Education[edit]
York County is served by several school districts, including Rock Hill Schools, Clover School District, and York School District 1. Higher education institutions in the county include Winthrop University and York Technical College.
Transportation[edit]
Major highways in York County include Interstate 77, U.S. Route 21, and South Carolina Highway 5. The county is also served by the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, located in nearby Charlotte, North Carolina.
