Buffalo County, South Dakota
Buffalo County is a county located in the state of South Dakota, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,948, making it the second-least populous county in South Dakota. The county seat is Gann Valley, which is also the only incorporated community in the county.
History[edit]
Buffalo County was created in 1864 and organized in 1871. It was named for the buffalo that roamed the area. The county has a rich history tied to the Native American tribes that originally inhabited the region.
Geography[edit]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 488 square miles (1,264 km²), of which 471 square miles (1,220 km²) is land and 17 square miles (44 km²) (3.5%) is water. The Missouri River forms the eastern boundary of the county.

Demographics[edit]
As of the 2020 census, there were 1,948 people, 551 households, and 420 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.1 inhabitants per square mile (1.6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly Native American, with a significant minority of White residents.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Buffalo County is primarily based on agriculture, with cattle ranching and crop farming being the main activities. The county also benefits from its proximity to the Missouri River, which provides opportunities for fishing and recreation.
Government and infrastructure[edit]
Buffalo County is governed by a board of commissioners. The county seat, Gann Valley, houses the main government offices, including the courthouse.

The county is served by the Crow Creek Tribal Schools, which provide education to the children of the Crow Creek Indian Reservation.
