iPod is a line of portable media players and multi-purpose pocket computers designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the compact iPod Nano, and the ultra-compact iPod Shuffle. iPods have been a market leader since their inception in 2001, with over 390 million units sold worldwide as of December 2014.

History[edit]

The iPod was first released on October 23, 2001, by Apple Inc. The product line has since seen many iterations and designs. The iPod's development was overseen by Tony Fadell, who was hired by Apple for this project.

Design[edit]

The iPod has evolved over time to include various models targeting the wants and needs of different users. iPods offer a simple user interface designed around a central scroll wheel. Most iPod models store media on an internal hard drive, while all models have a color display which can display cover art and can play video files on the iPod Classic and iPod Nano models.

Software[edit]

iPods can sync with iTunes on a Mac or Windows computer. iTunes has a large library of music, podcasts, e-books, movies, and TV shows available for download. It also serves as a management application for your iPod, allowing you to organize your media, create playlists, and transfer files between your computer and iPod.

Impact[edit]

The iPod has had a significant impact on the music industry and the way we consume media. It has popularized the use of digital music and has been instrumental in the shift from physical media to digital media.
