Wealthy (apple)

The Wealthy is a variety of apple that was the earliest to thrive in the Minnesota climate. Horticulturist Peter Gideon grew it first in 1868. The apple was named "Wealthy", after Gideon's wife, Wealthy Hull Gideon.

History[edit]

The Wealthy apple was cultivated by Peter Gideon, who had moved to Minnesota for health reasons. He was determined to grow apples that could withstand the harsh winters. After many failed attempts, he finally succeeded with the Wealthy apple, which he grew from seeds he had purchased from Bangor, Maine. The Wealthy apple was the first apple variety to survive Minnesota's harsh winters, paving the way for more robust apple varieties in the region.

Characteristics[edit]

The Wealthy apple is medium-sized with a short stem. Its skin is smooth and has a bright red blush over a pale yellow background. The flesh is white, crisp, juicy, and slightly tart, making it excellent for eating fresh and for cooking. The Wealthy apple is also known for its early harvest, beginning in late August.

Cultivation[edit]

The Wealthy apple tree is hardy and resistant to many diseases. It is a vigorous grower and a reliable producer, making it a favorite among apple growers in cold climates. The tree prefers well-drained soil and full sun.

Legacy[edit]

The success of the Wealthy apple led to the development of the apple industry in Minnesota and other cold climates. It also led to the creation of the University of Minnesota's apple breeding program, which has produced other successful apple varieties such as the Honeycrisp and the Haralson.
