Cars 2 is a 2011 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It is the sequel to 2006's Cars, and features the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, John Turturro, and Eddie Izzard.

Plot

In Cars 2, race car Lightning McQueen (Wilson) and tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix, but Mater becomes sidetracked with international espionage.

Production

The film was directed by John Lasseter, co-directed by Brad Lewis, written by Ben Queen, and produced by Denise Ream. This was also the final film directed by Lasseter prior to his exit from Disney in 2018.

Reception

Cars 2 was a box office success, grossing $562 million worldwide against a budget of $200 million. However, it received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its animation and the voice performances of its cast, but criticized its storyline.

Legacy

Despite its mixed critical reception, Cars 2 has been influential in the field of animation, particularly in its use of 3D computer graphics. It also led to the creation of a spin-off film, Planes, and a third Cars film, Cars 3.
