MobileMe

MobileMe (formerly known as .Mac and iTools) was a subscription-based collection of online services and software offered by Apple Inc. from 2000 to 2012. It included services such as email, contacts and calendar syncing, remote access to files, a website hosting service, and a photo and video sharing service.

History

MobileMe was announced on January 5, 2000, as iTools, a free collection of Internet-based tools for users of Mac OS 9. In 2002, Apple rebranded iTools as .Mac', making it a paid subscription service. In 2008, Apple announced that .Mac would be replaced by MobileMe, a service that would provide push email, contacts, and calendar updates directly to iPhones without the need for a computer.

Services

MobileMe provided a variety of services, which were designed to be available and synchronized on users' Macs, PCs, and iOS devices.

Mail

MobileMe Mail was a push IMAP email service. It used the @me.com email domain and allowed up to 20 GB of email storage.

Contacts

MobileMe Contacts was a service that kept contacts updated on all of a user's devices. It used CardDAV for syncing.

Calendar

MobileMe Calendar was a web-based calendar service that could sync with the Calendar application on Mac OS X, as well as with Outlook on Windows.

iDisk

iDisk was an online storage system that allowed users to store documents, pictures, QuickTime files, and PDFs.

Find My iPhone

Find My iPhone was a service that allowed users to track the location of their iOS device or Mac.

Discontinuation

On June 6, 2011, Apple announced that MobileMe would be discontinued after June 30, 2012, with the launch of iCloud. Existing MobileMe subscribers were allowed to keep their accounts until their subscription ended, then the service ceased to exist.
