iPadOS is an operating system developed by Apple Inc. specifically for the company's iPad line of tablet computers. It was first announced at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2019 as a derivative of iOS, the operating system used in the iPhone.
History
The first version of iPadOS, iPadOS 13, was released on September 24, 2019. It introduced several features designed to take advantage of the larger screen space of the iPad, including a new home screen layout with a permanent widget view, enhanced multitasking capabilities, and the ability to open multiple windows of the same app.
Features
iPadOS includes a number of features that differentiate it from iOS, including:
- Split View and Slide Over: These multitasking features allow users to use two apps at the same time or quickly switch between apps.
- Apple Pencil support: iPadOS includes a number of features designed to enhance the use of the Apple Pencil, including improved latency and new markup capabilities.
- Safari: The version of Safari included in iPadOS is a desktop-class browser, meaning it automatically presents the desktop version of websites and includes features like a download manager and enhanced tab management.
- Files app: The Files app in iPadOS provides a more robust file management system than in iOS, including support for external storage devices and file servers.
Versions
Since its initial release, Apple has regularly updated iPadOS to add new features and fix bugs. The most recent version, iPadOS 15, was released in September 2021 and introduced features like a redesigned multitasking interface, the ability to place widgets anywhere on the home screen, and the new Focus mode.
Reception
Since its release, iPadOS has been generally well received by critics and users. Many have praised its enhanced multitasking capabilities and the addition of a more robust file management system, although some have criticized its learning curve and occasional bugs.
