Vasectomy

From WikiMD's Medical Encyclopedia

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. During the procedure, the vasa deferentia, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra, are cut, tied, or otherwise sealed.

Vasectomy

Procedure[edit]

Vasectomy is typically performed under local anesthesia. Two types of vasectomy are the incision method and the no-scalpel (or no-cut) method. In both methods, the vasa deferentia are sealed using cautery or clips.

Complications[edit]

As with any surgical procedure, vasectomy comes with potential complications such as infection, hematoma, or sperm granuloma. However, these are relatively rare.

Reversal[edit]

Vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) is a procedure in which the vasa deferentia are reconnected. This allows sperm to be present in the semen again, potentially restoring fertility.

Effectiveness[edit]

Vasectomy is one of the most effective forms of birth control. However, it doesn't have an immediate effect. A follow-up semen analysis is usually performed three months post-operation to confirm the absence of sperm.

Cultural and Ethical Considerations[edit]

As with any form of permanent contraception, there are cultural and ethical considerations that come into play with the decision to proceed with a vasectomy. These considerations can include religious beliefs, societal norms, personal values, and the inherent ethics of sterilization.
