Embryo Donation

Embryo donation (pronunciation: /ˈɛmbriːoʊ dəˈneɪʃən/) is a form of third party reproduction. It is defined as the giving—generally without compensation—of embryos remaining after one couple's in vitro fertilisation to another person or couple, followed by the placement of those embryos into the recipient woman's uterus to facilitate pregnancy and childbirth in the recipient.

Etymology

The term "embryo donation" is derived from the Greek word "embryon" (meaning "young one") and the Latin word "donatio" (meaning "gift").

Process

The process of embryo donation involves several steps, including the initial donation of the embryos by the donor couple, the freezing and storage of the embryos, the matching of the embryos with a recipient couple, and the transfer of the embryos to the recipient's uterus.

Related Terms

  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF): A process of fertilisation where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in vitro ("in glass"). The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman's ovulatory process, removing an ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a liquid in a laboratory.
  • Embryo: An early stage of development of a multicellular organism. In general, in organisms that reproduce sexually, embryonic development is the part of the life cycle that begins just after fertilization and continues through the formation of body structures, such as tissues and organs.
  • Donor: A person who donates something voluntarily, often blood, organs, or in this case, embryos, for the benefit of others.
  • Recipient: A person who receives something, in this case, the donated embryos.
