Pornography

Pornography (pronunciation: /pɔːrˈnɒɡrəfi/) is a term used to describe the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the exclusive purpose of sexual arousal. Pornography may be presented in a variety of media, including books, magazines, postcards, photographs, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, writing, film, video, and video games.

Etymology

The term "pornography" originates from the Greek words pornē (πόρνη) meaning "prostitute" and graphein (γράφειν) meaning "to write". It was originally defined as any work of art or literature depicting the life of prostitutes.

  • Erotica: Works of art, including literature, photography, film, sculpture and painting, that are intended to evoke or express sexual desire, not necessarily including sexual acts. Unlike pornography, erotica does not aim solely at sexual arousal.
