Electrical impedance tomography
Electrical Impedance Tomography
Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive type of medical imaging in which the electrical conductivity, permittivity, and impedance of a part of the body is inferred from surface electrode measurements and used to form a tomographic image of that part. Electrical conductivity varies considerably among various biological tissues (absolute EIT) or the distribution of conductivity changes in time (differential EIT), and the subsequent images can be used in a variety of medical and industrial settings.
Pronunciation
Electrical Impedance Tomography: /ɪˌlɛktrɪkəl ɪmˌpiːdəns tɒməˈɡræfi/
Etymology
The term "Electrical Impedance Tomography" is derived from the following words: "Electrical" (relating to electricity), "Impedance" (the effective resistance of an electric circuit or component to alternating current, arising from the combined effects of ohmic resistance and reactance), and "Tomography" (a technique for displaying a representation of a cross section through a human body or other solid object using X-rays or ultrasound).
Related Terms
- Tomography: A method of producing a three-dimensional image of the internal structures of a solid object by the observation and recording of the differences in the effects on the passage of waves of energy impinging on those structures.
- Impedance: The effective resistance of an electric circuit or component to alternating current, arising from the combined effects of ohmic resistance and reactance.
- Medical Imaging: The technique and process of creating visual representations of the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention.
- Conductivity: The degree to which a specified material conducts electricity, calculated as the ratio of the current density in the material to the electric field which causes the flow of current.
- Permittivity: The measure of a material's ability to store an electric field in the polarization of the medium.
