octreotide scan - (pronounced) (ok-TREE-oh-tide-skan) A type of radionuclide scan used to detect carcinoids and other types of tumors. Radioactive octreotide, a drug similar to somatostatin, is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream. The radioactive octreotide attaches itself to tumor cells that have receptors for somatostatin. A radiation meter detects the radioactive octreotide and takes pictures that show where the tumor cells are in the body. Also called somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and SRS
