A Dental Procedure (pronunciation: /ˈdɛn.təl prəˈsiː.dʒər/) is a method or course of action designed to achieve a particular result in the treatment or prevention of diseases or conditions that affect the teeth and moral cavity.

Etymology

The term "Dental Procedure" is derived from the Latin word "Dentālis," meaning "of or pertaining to the teeth," and the Latin word "Procedere," meaning "to go forward."

Types of Dental Procedures

There are several types of dental procedures, including:

  • Dental Cleaning: This is a procedure that involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.
  • Dental Filling: This is a treatment modality to restore the function, integrity, and morphology of missing tooth structure resulting from caries or external trauma.
  • Root Canal Treatment: This is a treatment sequence for the infected pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection and the protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.
  • Dental Extraction: This is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to render the tooth non-restorable.
  • Dental Implants: These are surgical components that interface with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor.
