Scaling and root planing
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is a non-surgical periodontal therapy that involves the removal of dental plaque and calculus, and then smoothing, or planing, of the exposed surfaces of the roots. This procedure is used to treat gum disease, or periodontitis, and to prevent further progression of the disease.
Pronunciation
Scaling: /ˈskeɪlɪŋ/ Root Planing: /ruːt ˈpleɪnɪŋ/
Etymology
The term "scaling" comes from the Old Norse word "skala", meaning "to chip off", while "planing" comes from the Old French "plane", meaning "to make smooth".
Procedure
The procedure is usually performed by a dental hygienist or a periodontist. It involves the use of specialized dental instruments, such as a periodontal scaler, periodontal curette, or an ultrasonic scaler, to remove dental plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gum line. The root surfaces are then planed to smooth the root and promote healing.
