Australian lime
Australian Lime is a common name for species of the plant genus Citrus that are native to Australia and surrounding islands. These species were formerly included in the genera Microcitrus and Eremocitrus. They have been used in modern breeding programs to expand the genetic diversity of commercial citrus.
Species[edit]
The Australian limes include the following species:
- Citrus australasica, also known as the finger lime
- Citrus australis, also known as the round lime or Australian round lime
- Citrus glauca, also known as the desert lime
- Citrus garrawayi, also known as the Mount white lime
- Citrus inodora, also known as the Russell River lime or large-leaf Australian wild lime
- Citrus maideniana, also known as Maiden's Australian wild lime
Cultivation and uses[edit]
Australian limes are cultivated for their fruit in Australia. The fruit can be eaten raw, or used as a flavoring in jams, preserves, and beverages. The finger lime, in particular, is noted for its unique caviar-like texture and intense flavor. The desert lime is highly prized for its ability to thrive in arid conditions.
Breeding programs[edit]
Australian limes have been used in breeding programs to develop new citrus varieties. These include the Australian finger lime (Citrus australasica), which has been crossed with other citrus species to create hybrids such as the Australian red centre lime and the Australian sunrise lime.
