acute radiation syndrome - (pronounced) (uh-KYOOT RAY-dee-AY-shun SIN-drome) Serious illness caused by exposure to high doses of certain types of radiation, usually over a short period of time. Symptoms of radiation acute syndrome usually appear immediately after exposure, but can appear and come and go over time. Symptoms include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, bleeding, hair loss, swelling, itching and redness of the skin, and other skin problems. Very high doses of radiation can lead to death. Also called acute radiation sickness, radiation poisoning, radiation sickness and radiation sickness syndrome
