Parellada
Parellada is a white grape variety primarily grown in the Catalonia region of Spain. It is one of the three traditional varieties used in the production of Cava, the Spanish sparkling wine. Parellada is known for its ability to produce wines with a delicate aroma and a crisp, refreshing taste.
Characteristics[edit]
Parellada grapes are typically grown in higher altitude vineyards, where the cooler temperatures allow the grapes to retain their acidity. This variety is valued for its ability to produce wines with a light body and a subtle floral aroma. The wines made from Parellada grapes often exhibit notes of green apple, pear, and citrus, making them an excellent choice for sparkling wine production.
Viticulture[edit]
The Parellada grape thrives in the cooler climates of the Catalan highlands. It is usually harvested later than other varieties, allowing it to develop its characteristic acidity and flavor profile. The grape clusters are medium-sized, and the berries are small and round, with a thin skin that contributes to the wine's delicate flavor.
Winemaking[edit]
In the production of Cava, Parellada is often blended with Macabeo and Xarel·lo, the other two traditional Cava grapes. Parellada contributes to the blend by adding finesse and elegance, balancing the fuller body of Xarel·lo and the fruitiness of Macabeo. The resulting sparkling wine is known for its fine bubbles and refreshing taste.
Uses[edit]
While Parellada is most commonly associated with Cava, it is also used to produce still white wines. These wines are typically light and crisp, with a lower alcohol content, making them ideal for pairing with light dishes such as seafood and salads.
