By binding to these receptors, nithiazine disrupts normal neural signaling, leading to paralysis and eventual death of the insect.

Development and Use

Nithiazine was first synthesized in the 1970s and was one of the first compounds to demonstrate the potential of targeting nAChRs in insects. Although nithiazine itself was not commercially successful due to its instability and photodegradation, it paved the way for the development of more stable and effective neonicotinoids, such as imidacloprid and thiamethoxam.

Environmental Impact

While nithiazine itself is not widely used, its derivatives, the neonicotinoids, have raised concerns regarding their environmental impact, particularly their effects on non-target organisms such as bees and other pollinators.
