McFlurry
McFlurry is a brand of flavored ice cream distributed by the international fast food restaurant chain, McDonald's. It was first introduced in 1997 and has since become a popular dessert option in McDonald's outlets worldwide.
History[edit]
The McFlurry was first developed by Ron McLellan, a Canadian franchisee of McDonald's, in 1995. It was officially launched in all Canadian outlets in 1997 and quickly gained popularity due to its unique blend of soft-serve ice cream and various mix-ins. The success of the McFlurry in Canada led to its introduction in the United States later in the same year.
Description[edit]
A McFlurry consists of soft-serve ice cream that is mixed with various ingredients, or "mix-ins". These mix-ins can include crushed cookies, candy pieces, or fruit. The ice cream and mix-ins are blended together using a specially designed spoon that attaches to a machine, creating a flurry of mixed ingredients, hence the name "McFlurry".
Varieties[edit]
There are several varieties of McFlurry available, with the specific options varying by region and time of year. Some of the most popular varieties include the Oreo McFlurry, which includes pieces of Oreo cookies, and the M&M's McFlurry, which includes M&M's candies. Seasonal varieties, such as the Shamrock Shake McFlurry for St. Patrick's Day and the Pumpkin Spice McFlurry for the fall season, are also offered.
Environmental Impact[edit]
In 2020, McDonald's announced plans to redesign the McFlurry spoon to be more environmentally friendly. The new design eliminates the hollow tube, which was previously mistaken for a straw and caused difficulties in recycling.
