Heart transplantation

Heart transplantation (pronunciation: /hɑːrt trænsplɑːnˈteɪʃən/), also known as a cardiac transplantation, is a surgical procedure that involves replacing a diseased or failing heart with a healthy one from a donor.

Etymology

The term "heart transplantation" is derived from the Latin words "cor" meaning heart, and "transplantare" meaning to plant or graft. The term "cardiac transplantation" comes from the Greek word "kardia" meaning heart, and the Latin word "transplantare".

Procedure

The heart transplantation procedure begins with the identification of a suitable donor, who is typically brain-dead but still has a functioning heart. The recipient's diseased heart is then removed and replaced with the donor's heart. The blood vessels are connected, and the new heart starts to beat. The chest is then closed, and the patient is taken to the intensive care unit for recovery.
