The American Diabetes Association (ADA) (pronunciation: /əˈmɛrɪkən daɪəˈbiːtiːz əˌsoʊsiˈeɪʃən/) is a United States-based non-profit organization dedicated to fighting the consequences of diabetes and helping those affected by it.

Etymology

The name "American Diabetes Association" is derived from its country of origin, the United States of America, and its primary focus, diabetes. The term "diabetes" comes from the Greek word "diabetes" which means "siphon", referring to the excessive urination associated with the condition. The term "association" signifies a group of people organized for a joint purpose.

History

The American Diabetes Association was founded in 1940 by a group of 28 physicians. Over the years, it has grown into one of the leading organizations in the field of diabetes research, education, and advocacy.

Mission

The mission of the ADA is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by the disease.
