Zestril (/zɛˈstrɪl/), also known as Lisinopril, is a medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), congestive heart failure, and to improve survival after a heart attack. It belongs to a class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors.
Etymology
The name "Zestril" is a brand name, and its generic name, "Lisinopril", is derived from "Lysine-N-pril", where "pril" is a common suffix for ACE inhibitors.
Usage
Zestril is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure and to improve survival after a heart attack.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Zestril include cough, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Serious side effects include fainting, symptoms of a high potassium blood level, and signs of infection.
